Teaching Math in Texas

If you’re looking to teach in a location that will provide you with more opportunities to engage with students one-on-one, then you might want to consider becoming a math teacher in Texas. The “Lone Star” state boasts a respectable student-to-teacher ratio of 15.8 students per teacher, just a hair under the national average of 16:1. Texas is also experiencing a shortage in math teachers in grades 7–12, which means there’s an active demand to fill these positions with talented, passionate and highly-trained educators.

Math Teacher Certification in Texas

Math Teaching Qualifications

In order to qualify for initial certification, prospective teachers must hold a bachelor’s degree and complete any/all required undergraduate coursework; complete a state-approved teacher preparation program; and pass the required examinations (including the Praxis II tests).

Credentials & Exams

  • One-Year Certificate: Prospective teachers who are waiting to complete the requirements for the Texas Standard Teaching Certificate are eligible to apply for this one-year non-renewable license. Note: all requirements for moving on to the regular teaching certificate must be completed while the one-year license is valid.
  • Standard Certificate: Once candidates have met all the specified requirements, they may apply for Texas’ Standard Teaching Certificate.
  • Reciprocity: Teachers issued a license from another state or jurisdiction may apply for a teaching certificate through Texas’ reciprocity program. In order to qualify, applicants must provide proof of issuance of an out-of-state teaching certificate; scores for the requisite examinations; and transcripts.

Alternative Certification for Math Teachers

Alternative Certification Program (ACP): Texas also offers a variety of alternative routes to earning a teaching certificate, many of which allow students/applicants to get firsthand experience as an intern during the program. Click here for more information on becoming a teacher through ACP.

Financial Aid for TX Math Teachers

  • Teach for Texas Loan Repayment Assistance: This loan repayment program is intended to draw talented individuals into the teaching profession to help address shortages in specified content areas, including mathematics. Maximum awards are distributed up to $2,500.
  • T.E.A.C.H. Texas Scholarships: Scholarships are available for Child Development Associate (CDA) Assessment Fees, associate degrees and bachelor’s degrees. T.E.A.C.H. Scholarship applications are accepted on an on-going basis and as funding allows.
