Teaching Math in North Dakota

If you can stomach the cold, snowy winters, then North Dakota can be an excellent place to be a math teacher. Teacher salaries fall right within the national average. North Dakota offers reciprocity licensing options, which make it possible for teachers licensed in other states to easily obtain an in-state teaching certificate. North Dakota’s low student-to-teacher ratio means you’ll have more opportunities to enhance your students’ learning experiences with more individualized instruction.

Math Teaching Qualifications

In order to qualify for a North Dakota teaching certificate, all candidates must complete a state-accredited teacher education program and pass the applicable standardized exams, including the Praxis I, or Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST).

Credentials & Exams

North Dakota offers two levels of certification:

  • Initial License: This two-year license is issued to first time applicants who meet the minimum requirements for North Dakota licensure.
  • Regular License: This five-year license is issued to teachers who have taught in a North Dakota school for 18 months and have met all other requirements.
  • Reciprocity: A two- or five-year license is issued to applicants holding a teaching license issued by another state IF such license was obtained through a regular accredited teacher education program. Applicants who have not been tested in their previous state, and were issued an out-of-state license after 2002, are required to take North Dakota’s standardized teaching examinations.

Alternative Certification for Math Teachers

North Dakota also offers an alternative route for individuals with non-education specialty degree. In order to qualify, applicants must

  • Complete a state approved education program at the graduate or undergraduate level.
  • Pass the Praxis I, or Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) in reading, writing, and mathematics.

  • Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Occupations Student Loan Program: This program offers loan options for students studying in any of the STEM fields.
  • Teacher Shortage Loan Forgiveness Individuals teaching in areas affected by teacher shortages, such as mathematics, can take advantage of this generous loan forgiveness program.
