Math Teacher Certification in Alabama
Math Teaching Qualifications
- The traditional route to certification in Alabama is to obtain a bachelor’s degree in the desired certification area from a state-approved teacher education program. After passing the Basic Skills Test (Alabama Prospective Teacher Testing Program, APTTP) and any subject area competence assessments (Praxis II: elementary education, early childhood education, etc.), individuals will become certified to teach in Alabama.
Credentials & Exams
- Alabama offers three main classes of teaching certificates.
- Class B requires a bachelor’s degree.
- Class A requires a Master’s degree
- Class AA requires completion of a state-approved sixth-year program of at least 30 semester hours of graduate credit from a regionally accredited senior institution.
Alternative Certification for Math Teachers
- Alabama offers alternative certification routes for applicants who already hold a bachelor’s degree in a non-teaching field. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree and an offer of employment from a local board of education or nonpublic school may obtain a special alternative certificate. The superintendent must request this certificate for one school year and may renew the certificate twice. During this time, applicants are expected to complete the requirements for an Alabama Class A (Master’s degree) certificate through an Alabama Fifth-Year Program.
- Alabama also offers a second alternative approach, the Alternative Baccalaureate-Level. This option is similar to the previous alternative pathway, except applicants must be able to document experience or study in the field for which certification is desired. The applicant will also be assigned a mentor.
Financial Aid for AL Math Teachers
- UABTeach: UABTeach will allow students majoring in mathematics, science and engineering to earn a degree and a teaching certificate without adding time or expense to their four-year degree program.
- Jay Murphy Scholarship: This scholarship is intended to provide financial aid to individuals who want to become teachers. Eligible applicants includes those who may be entering or continuing college, individuals who are currently in education and want to upgrade their skills or working individuals who wish to return to college to pursue a teaching career.
- Boeing Alabama: This grant program focuses on advancing students’ capacity for lifelong learning and their overall educational outcomes, especially in subjects that can prepare them for careers in the STEM fields.
- University of South Alabama College of Education Pathway to Science Noyce Scholarship Program: This program seeks to encourage talented science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors and professionals to become K-12 mathematics and science teachers.
- Technology for Teachers: The Alabama Commission on Higher Education awards scholarships to current teachers enrolled in technology courses at an Alabama college or university.
- Alabama Math and Science Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to residents attending an Alabama university and seeking a teaching degree in math or science. Awardees must commit to teaching for five years in a critical school system.
