Teaching Math in Utah

Lower cost of living, numerous vacation attractions, natural wonders and myriad ski resorts are just a few of the benefits of living in the state of Utah. Utah also has three levels of certification to meet the needs of an increasingly diversified pool of talented educators.

Math Teacher Certification in Utah

Math Teaching Qualifications

In order to qualify for certification in Utah, teachers must graduate from an accredited college/university with bachelor’s degree; complete an approved teacher preparation program; and pass the requisite examinations.

Credentials & Exams

  • Testing Requirements: Utah does not require prospective teachers to sit for the Praxis I Basic Skills test; however, the Praxis II: Subject Test is required in an individual’s content area and the Principles of Learning and Teaching is required to advance from a Level 1 certificate to Level 2.
  • Utah offers three levels of teacher certification:
    • Level 1: Prospective teachers must complete an approved teacher preparation program and achieve passing results on the Praxis II tests.
    • Level 2: Teachers looking to advance to the Level 2 certificate must complete the requirements for the Entry Years Enhance (EYE) plus obtain a recommendation from the employing school district.
    • Level 3: Teachers who have earned National Board Certification or a doctoral degree in their respective subject areas are eligible for the Level 3 teaching certificate.
  • Reciprocity: Teachers issued a license from another state or jurisdiction may apply for a teaching certificate through Utah’s reciprocity program. In order to qualify, applicants must provide proof of issuance of an out-of-state teaching certificate; scores for the requisite examinations; and transcripts.

Alternative Certification for Math Teachers

Alternative Route to Licensure: Individuals with a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in the area they intend to teach may be eligible for a special teaching certificate. For more information, visit the Utah Office of Education’s website on alternative licensure options.

Financial Aid for UT Math Teachers

  • Terrence H. Bell Teaching Incentive Loan: This incentivized loan program offers state-sponsored loans to eligible high school seniors who agree to teach in a Utah school upon graduating college. Each semester of teaching will result in cancellation of a portion of the principal balance owed.
  • The Rosenthal Prize for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching: Developed by the National Museum of Mathematics, this $25,000 award aims to encourage innovative and hands-on math instruction in the middle and upper grades. The winning lesson plan is posted on the museum website in order to help spread innovative teaching methods to classrooms across the country.
