Math Teacher Certification in Ohio

Math Teaching Qualifications

In order to qualify for a teaching certificate in Ohio, prospective teachers must complete the requisite undergraduate coursework, graduate from an accredited teacher preparation program and pass the required teaching licensure examinations.

Credentials & Exams

Ohio has a four-tier licensure system:

  • Regular Resident Educator License: To qualify for this four-year license, prospective teachers must hold a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher preparation program, pass the required licensure exams and complete 12 semester hours of reading for early childhood, middle childhood, intervention specialist and early childhood intervention specialist licenses.
  • Proposed Professional Educator: Prospective teachers who have graduated with a bachelor’s degree and who have completed the Ohio Resident Educator Program are eligible to apply for this five-year license. Teachers holding an alternate license must complete additional requirements needed to qualify for a Professional license.
  • Senior Professional Educator: This five-year advanced teaching license is issued to candidates who have a Master’s degree, nine years of teaching experience (five of the nine years must be under a professional/permanent license) and have successfully completed the requirements for a Master Teacher portfolio.
  • Lead Professional Educator: This license is valid for five years and is issued to qualifying candidates who possess a Master’s degree, nine years of teaching experience (five of the nine years must be under a professional/permanent or senior professional educator license), have earned the Teacher Leader Endorsement AND completed the Master Teacher portfolio OR hold National Board Certification.
  • Reciprocity: Ohio offers reciprocal licenses to teachers who have been issued teaching licenses from another state or jurisdiction. To qualify, you will need to verify your out-of-state license, experience and your results from the required tests.

Alternative Certification for Math Teachers

Alternate Resident Educator License: Qualifying candidates must graduate with a bachelor’s degree (with a major in the subject area to be taught) OR else have extensive work experience in that subject area. In addition, applicants will have to complete an Intensive Pedagogical Training Institute (IPTI) program and pass the requisite content area examinations.

Financial Aid for OH Math Teachers

  • Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program: This scholarship program is available for students pursuing a degree program in science, technology, engineering or mathematics.
  • Math Hero Awards: Raytheon’s annual award ($2,500 to each winner and his/her school) recognizing middle and high school math teachers who use interactive and creative learning approaches to make math real and relatable for their students.
